John Taylor is most often attributed with writing the tribute to Joseph and Hyrum, which is now found in Section 135.
Taylor was a first-hand witness to
the tragic events of 27 June 1844, and was himself seriously injured on that occasion.
Carthage Jail is therefore the most important location associated
with this Section.

The tribute was first included in the 1844 edition of the Doctrine and Covenants, which was published in September
or October of that year. Thus, it is
most likely that Taylor wrote it either at home while convalescing, or in his office
where the Doctrine and Covenants was being printed.
